TrainDL Publication: Introducing AI Literacy in Schools

Artificial Intelligence is one of the fastest developing areas of digitization. As students interact with AI technologies every day, they should learn how these technologies can extract insights from data and both critically evaluate and effectively use them. But how can teachers decide here what content they should integrate into their lessons? What learning methods can they use in a field that is constantly changing and may even seem too complex to many adults?

The TrainDL project is currently addressing these questions in a new publication. "Introducing Artificial Intelligence Literacy in Schools: A Review of Competence Areas, Pedagogical Approaches, Contexts and Formats" provides an overview of existing concepts that can be used to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) into the classroom in a technically and methodologically sound way.

The Erasmus+ project TrainDL, coordinated by the Gesellschaft für Informatik, aims to develop and test training modules for teachers that introduce them to concepts for teaching data and AI skills. On the way to developing such new educational concepts and anchoring them in teacher and school education, however, it is first necessary to analyze and assess the current educational landscape.

For this reason, the authors Viktoriya Olari, Kamilla Tenório and Ralf Romeike from Freie Universität Berlin, consortium member of the TrainDL project, examine existing practices and formats for teaching AI skills. On the one hand, these have already been tested and are being used in practice; on the other hand, the authors also focus on those that need to be further developed. This allows the authors to identify areas in which the existing concepts either already form a useful basis or can still be particularly expanded. Based on this work, concepts and teaching materials for teachers are developed to enable a profound introduction to AI competencies in the classroom.

The paper was submitted to the World Conference on Computers in Education 2022 and accepted for publication. The authors presented the results in August at the conference in Hiroshima, Japan. As of now, the entire publication is already publicly available as an authors' draft.
